Vera introduced a new enactment into this routine that literally related to her having been adopted. She became fascinated by the frogs and fish in the pond. Using a net attached to a pole, she attempted many times to scoop up a frog. Eventually she caught one and placed it into a large plastic container along with grass and water. She named the frog Lucky. After talking with the frog in a friendly and playful way, she returned it to the pond. During each of the following sessions, she again scooped at the water until she caught a frog and, repeating the same enactment, talked to the frog in soothing tones much as a mother would talk to a very young child. Interacting with each frog, she gradually elaborated that "Lucky is an orphan" and "needs a home." Vera assigned herself the role of "mother" who "adopts Lucky." Toward the end of this phase, using toy animals, human toy figures, and toy furniture, Vera constructed a farm alongside the rill and played out several themes. Mother and daughter worked
